Seeing Is Believing
Choosing cabinets is one of the biggest decisions in any kitchen project. It’s tempting to pick a door style and finish from a website, a catalog, or a photo on your phone. But the best way to know you’ll love the result is to hold an actual door sample in your hands.
Here’s why a real sample makes such a difference.
7 Reasons to Get a Real Door Sample
1. Screens and catalogs don’t show true color
Every monitor, phone, and printer displays color a little differently. A stain that looks like a warm gray online might turn out cooler or darker in person. A physical sample shows you the finish exactly as it will arrive.
2. Your lighting changes everything
The same finish can look completely different under natural daylight, warm LEDs, or cool fluorescent bulbs. Take the sample home and look at it in your kitchen in the morning, afternoon, and evening. What you see then is what you’ll live with.
The two cabinets to the right are the same color but they do not appear to be the same color. The cabinet on the left is lit primarily with natural light and the one of the right with primarily artificial light. Read about how lighting impacts color.
3. Everything has to work together
Cabinets share the room with countertops, backsplash tile, flooring, wall paint, and hardware. Holding a sample next to your granite slab or flooring plank is the only reliable way to confirm the whole design comes together.
- Wood is naturally unique with color variation
Species like oak, cherry, and walnut have grain patterns and color variation that a small image simply can’t capture. Seeing a real door helps you know what to expect, so there are no surprises when your cabinets are installed. Most people appreciate the natural color variation in wood, but some do not. Best to know this up front.
This post on white oak is helpful to understanding natural color variation in wood.
Also the there is often a difference with the same stain on veneer and solid wood, which are both at times used on the same door. The photo above demonstrates what the difference can look like on white oak. The frame is solid and the panel veneer.
- Sheen and texture matter
Glossy or matte, smooth or distressed, glazed or clean: these details are hard to judge from a picture. With a sample, you can see how the finish catches the light and feel the surface for yourself.
- Details show up at full scale
Edge profiles, panel depth, and the proportions of the door frame look different in real life than in a thumbnail. A full-size sample gives you an honest sense of the style.
- It prevents costly mistakes
Cabinets are a significant investment, and at Bishop they’re made just for you, so they can’t be returned. Confirming your choice with a real sample up front helps avoid remakes, delays, and disappointment.
The Bottom Line
A door sample is a small step that protects a big investment. Before you finalize your cabinet selection, ask your dealer for a sample of the door style and finish you’re considering. Take it home, live with it for a few days, and make your decision with confidence.
Bishop Priority Sample Program
At Bishop, we know how much a fast sample turnaround matters to both dealers and homeowners. Waiting weeks to see a finish can stall an entire kitchen project, so we’ve made it faster.
We now stock our most popular door styles and wood species, which together make up nearly 70% of all the doors we sell. Because these 11.5″ x 17″ sample doors are already on hand, we can deliver custom-finished samples in two weeks 90% of the time.
Sample doors outside the program still have a standard lead time of 3 to 4 weeks. Learn more about the available door styles in the Priority Sample Program.
